Penny Stove

Instructions and Safety Precautions.
Each Penny Stove kit comes with a complete set of step-by-step Instructions and Safety Precautions.  The ONLY fuel I recommend for use in the Penny Stove is Denatured Alcohol.  Don’t confuse Denatured alcohol with Isopropyl alcohol (sometimes called rubbing alcohol).  Isopropyl alcohol contains as much as 15% water and will burn sooty and produce less heat.  Denatured Alcohol burns extremely clean and is available at any Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, and most hardware stores.  One quart of Denatured alcohol is enough fuel for about 18 full burns of the Penny Stove and can also be safely stored and carried in a heavy plastic drinking water bottle.

A special note of caution here…  DO NOT use gasoline, white gas, diesel fuel, kerosene, or any other petroleum based fuel in this (or any other) alcohol stove.  The use of petroleum based fuels in the Penny Stove could cause an explosion and severe burns.

Performance and Specifications
The Penny Stove is constructed entirely from recycled aluminum cans, it has no moving parts to wear out, uses no glue (except to secure the spare penny), tape, or solder, and any unused fuel after each use can be poured back into your fuel container to be used later.  From first-light to flame-out, a full load of fuel (approximately 1.75 ounces) will burn for 13-15 minutes in the full burn mode, or up to 30 minutes in the simmer mode.  In full burn mode it can heat 4 cups of (60-degree) water to a boil in six minutes, or 2 cups of water in four minutes or less.  Note: low temperatures or gusty winds will affect performance.  The weight of the entire Penny Stove kit (including the complete stove, pot stand, and wind screen) is only 2.7 ounces (about 75 grams) and it stores nicely inside most small cooking pots.

Building your own Penny Stove?
Although I have built more than 200 Penny Stoves over the years, this is not a full-time business for me.  I build these wonderful little stoves in my spare time for people who might not otherwise have the time, energy, skills, tools, or initiative to build their own.  Mark Jurey and I both agree that the construction plans should be available at no charge to anyone who might want to build their own, and to that end, we have posted a complete set of instructions for building your own Penny Stove on line at:  http://www.jureystudio.com/pennystove/waite_instruct.html
